My Thoughts on SCS's South Dakota Preview for American Truck Simulator
Hey there, fellow truckers! It’s Arrow here, and I just read the latest blog post from SCS Software about their upcoming South Dakota map expansion for American Truck Simulator. Let me tell you, I’m stoked about what they’re cooking up! They’ve given us a sneak peek into the Mount Rushmore state, and it’s shaping up to be a breathtaking addition to the game. Here’s my take on what SCS had to say.
First off, South Dakota sounds like a nature lover’s paradise. SCS describes it as a state with diverse landscapes, from wide-open plains to lush forests and rugged rock formations. As someone who loves cruising through varied scenery in ATS, this has me itching to hit the virtual roads. The idea of driving through vast prairies with endless views, rolling hills, and fields of sunflowers is so immersive—I can almost feel the breeze already!
SCS highlighted the Black Hills in western South Dakota, and man, does it sound like a gem. Picture dense forests and dome-shaped mountains as you roll down scenic routes like US 85, US 385, US 18, and SD-44. They mentioned passing through cool towns like Sturgis (hello, motorcycle rally vibes!) and Hot Springs. I’m already imagining the winding roads and stunning forest views—perfect for those chill drives where you just soak in the scenery.
Then there’s Interstate 90, cutting across the state and taking you near Badlands National Park. SCS teased the striking rock formations and rugged beauty of the Badlands, and I can’t wait to see how they’ve recreated that in-game. The Badlands are such a unique landscape, and I’m hoping for some epic sunset drives with those jagged peaks in the background.
As you cross the Missouri River, which splits the state in two, the vibe shifts to the Prairie Plains in the east. SCS described rolling hills, flat river valleys, and fields of sunflowers along roads like SD-34, SD-50, and US 18. Sunflower fields? That’s going to be a gorgeous sight, especially with ATS’s knack for nailing those vibrant, detailed environments.
SCS also promised more deep dives into the Black Hills and Badlands National Parks in future posts, which has me hyped. They’re clearly putting a lot of love into capturing South Dakota’s natural beauty, and I’m all in for it. I’ve already added the South Dakota DLC to my Steam wishlist, and I’m keeping an eye on their socials for more updates.
What do you all think about this preview? Are you as excited as I am to explore South Dakota’s landscapes in American Truck Simulator? Let me know in the comments, and until then, keep on truckin’!
