Project Route 66 Rework: Meet the Team Behind the Revamp

Hi, I'm Arrow, and I'm thrilled to share an exciting update from SCS Software about the team working on the Route 66 Rework for American Truck Simulator. This iconic highway is getting a major overhaul, and the talented folks at SCS Software are pouring their hearts into bringing it to life. Let’s dive into the details and meet the team shaping this legendary stretch of road!

A few weeks ago, SCS Software announced the Route 66 Rework, focusing on key sections in Northern Arizona and parts of New Mexico along I-40. With the California Rework Project complete and the Illinois DLC in development, the team is now ready to bring Route 66 up to modern map design standards. This ambitious project involves a 16-member team, including external collaborators, all working to make this highway unforgettable. Here’s a glimpse into the team and their passion for this project.

Janek - Project Lead

Janek, who’s been with SCS Software for nearly seven years, is leading the charge. Having guided the third and fourth phases of the California rework, he’s now fully immersed in reworks—both in-game and in his personal life, as he’s also renovating his apartment! His role involves coordinating with other departments, supporting the team, and ensuring the rework meets SCS’s high standards. Janek’s enthusiasm for reworks is infectious, and he’s already teasing what might come next. Any guesses on which rework will finish first?

Ella

Ella, a game developer with a passion for American urbanism and culture, is tackling Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city. With nearly six years at SCS, she’s channeling her experience into redesigning the city to highlight its historic Route 66 charm. Players will soon drive through Albuquerque’s vibrant downtown, a feature missing in the original map. Ella’s excited to blend her artistic vision with the rich history of Route 66, ensuring players feel the road’s legacy.

Johny

Johny joined SCS during the COVID era, bringing his Civil Engineering degree from CTU to map design. He finds it less stressful and more fun than traditional engineering. Currently, he’s crafting the Grand Canyon, drawing from his real-life visit to make it as authentic as possible. Johny’s goal is to create a breathtaking experience that players will love exploring.

Terez

Terez, who joined in 2022, is a map designer with a love for World of Warcraft, painting, and manga like Berserk. She’s working on Kingman, Flagstaff, and the small Route 66 settlement of Seligman. Terez enjoys designing depot areas, truck stops, and city downtowns, and she’s thrilled to bring her passion to the Route 66 Rework. She hopes players will find the revamped areas as exciting as she does.

Filip

Fresh off the California rework, Filip is breathing new life into Page and US-191. He’s embracing the unique challenges of these areas to capture Arizona’s authentic atmosphere. Filip’s excited to create memorable journeys that showcase the state’s stunning landscapes.

Roman

Roman, marking his third year at SCS, loves the collaborative spirit of the team. His work on the Route 66 Rework involves balancing the need to preserve gameplay while updating or expanding areas. Sometimes, it’s a complete rebuild; other times, it’s adding new, exciting locations. Roman’s eager to see how players react to the changes and is grateful for the journey SCS has taken him on.

Margo

Margo’s task is bringing Camp Verde and the surrounding I-17 and US-260 areas to life. She’s tackled the challenge of making Arizona’s semi-arid plains engaging by adding diverse biomes and sculpting techniques. Her work on Camp Verde creates a cozy, must-visit spot for players, with mountainous views that add depth to the drive.

Tomáš

Tomáš thrives on designing open landscapes—forests, hills, mountains, and rocks. He’s working on Arizona’s rural roads, away from the big cities, and appreciates the chance to enhance base game locations. For Tomáš, the Route 66 Rework is a chance to showcase the diverse biomes that make ATS special.

Mykyta

As the vegetation specialist, Mykyta is shaping the landscapes around Tucumcari. His goal is to capture the dusty, sun-soaked vibe of Route 66, complete with weathered motels and desert plains. Mykyta’s work ensures the scenery feels alive and true to the road’s iconic spirit.

Rob

Rob’s lifelong love for gaming, from Prehistorik on DOS to today, led him to SCS after a hectic corporate career. As a new map designer, he’s thrilled to work on Route 66’s open roads, neon motels, and old gas stations. Rob’s ready to deliver a classic American road trip experience.

Barbara

Barbara, a recent addition to SCS, is a lifelong gamer turned map designer. She’s shaping Arizona and Nevada, focusing on the sun-scorched desert atmosphere. Barbara hopes to visit these places in real life one day and is excited to bring their essence into the game.

Jakub

As a longtime ATS player, Jakub’s thrilled to join SCS and contribute to map creation. He loves America’s diverse landscapes and vibrant color palettes, which he’s incorporating into his work. Jakub’s goal is to craft true-to-life, beautiful scenery that players will enjoy discovering.

This talented team is pouring their creativity and passion into making the Route 66 Rework a memorable experience for American Truck Simulator players. From historic city vibes to sprawling desert landscapes, they’re ensuring every mile feels authentic and engaging. Stay tuned for more updates by following SCS Software or us. Until then, safe travels on the virtual roads!
